New Video

So... I made a video, for my podcasting class. This one has actual video clips, this time, unlike the last one. It is quite similar though, focusing mainly on the Stanley Cup Finals. Also, it may be a good idea to stop watching before the end, because I had to say something on the video, and its stuck on at the end. So...blah. Anyway, check the video out. Tell me what you think. I think its pretty neat.

Race to Four, Not Race to One

It's the race to four, not the race to one.

That's why I'm not worried about the Penguins chances in this round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Even though they lost the first game by a slim margin, they still have six more chances to get to the elusive four wins.

Tonight, is the first of those six. Again they will meet with the Ottawa Senators, and again they will get a chance to defend their Stanley Cup Champion status. To any doubted, I say, anything can happen in the playoffs. It's like a brand new season.

Goodbye, Igloo

Last night, as Pittsburgh Penguins fans, we said goodbye. It was like saying goodbye to a childhood home, or an old friend. We said goodbye to the Mellon Arena, The Civic Arena, the Igloo.

Technically, it wasn't really a final goodbye. That will come later. But it was a ceremonial goodbye. It was the last regular season home game to be played in the Mellon Arena.

And boy, did the Pens go out with a bang. We all hoped they would win this game. It would have been sad if they hadn't. But who expected the outcome that they got?

Just a few highlights:

They beat the Islanders 7-3.

Sidney Crosby got his 500th career point.

Marc-Andre Fluery made a spectacular triple save.

Bill Guerin became the first player to score 20 goals with at least 7 teams (he's played with the Pens, Islanders, Blues, Stars, Bruins, Oliers, and Devils, as well as the Sharks).

So...Kinda Unprepared Today

I don't have a post prepared today, so I figured I'd just throw something up to keep the continuity going.

So... a few questions/topics/whatever:

• What's up with Malkin this season? And when is he gonna get back to the way he was last year?
• In the last week, they lost to the Caps, Devils, and the Canes. The Devils and the Caps kinda pissed me off, but the Canes not so much. I'm not saying I'm a Canes fan, but I don't hate them. So my question is...do you "not hate" any other teams in addition to the Penguins?

All That Build-Up…

For nothing.

Really Boston?

Matt Cooke nearly turned one of your guys into a vegetable and you do nothing?

As we all know a few weeks ago, Matt Cooke laid a heavy hit on Boston’s Marc Savard. The hit was so bad, that Savard had to be taken off on a stretcher. So… in the days that led up to this game, people speculated what the Bruins would do to retaliate. Some thought they would go straight to the source and set their sights on Matt Cooke. Others thought they would try to hit the Pens where it hurt and go after Sidney Crosby.

…And nothing happened.

In fact, Boston did nothing… at all.

They were totally shut out. It was an awesome night for the Pens though. Tyler Kennedy scored for the first time in how long, Marc-Andre Fleury had a shut out and of course, Matt Cooke and Mike Rupp got into fights.

Here’s to winning the next one, tomorrow (March 20) at home, against the Hurricanes.

So, this game turned out a little bit better than the last one. They won 6-3. And the game was awesome.

I'm going to the Pens game tomorrow, against the Dallas Stars. I'll post pictures in the next few days.

Hope they do better than the last game I went to.

Canada vs. Slovakia : Hossa Sucks

These Olympics have been full of showdowns for Sidney Crosby, and Team Canada.

First they faced Team USA, pitting Sid against Penguins teammate Brooks Orpik.

Then, Sid vs. Ovie. Ovechkin was once again taken down by a team that included Sidney Crosby.

Tonight, Team Canada takes on Slovakia. And who’s on Team Slovakia? Dun dun dun…..Hossa. If you’ll remember, Marian Hossa was a member of the 2007-2008 Penguins. The same Penguins that went to the Stanley cup finals, and lost to Detroit. We all know what happened after that. Hossa went to Detroit, thinking his chances were better, and then got beaten my his old team, the Pens.

Knowing Hossa’s luck, tonight’s game will probably end up the same way every game involving Sid does. With a loss.

Hockey Fights

They make a boring game more interesting. They make a losing game worth watching.

Hockey is pretty much the only sport in which players can get into a full blown fist fight, and be back in the game in 2-5 minutes.

But why is it allowed? Is it only in the NHL? Why do they do it?

The main reason it’s allowed is that it’s tradition. Fighting in hockey has been around since the 19th century.

And no, it doesn’t only happen in the NHL. It exists in ametuer hockey, just as much as professional hockey.

As for why they do it, it usually has to do with frustration. Most players fight because they are frustrated that another player is playing dirty or basically doing things they shouldn’t. Usually in these situations, they player that starts the fight feels that the other one has not been punished for what ever it is that they did.

Winter Olympics 2010

So.. the Olympics start tonight. That’s good news and bad news. The bad news is no NHL hockey for the next two weeks. The good news is, we get to see quite a few Penguins and former Penguins playing for their country.

Marc Andre Fluery is playing for team Canada, along with Sidney Crosby. Jordan Staal and his brother Eric (of the Carolina Hurricanes) tried out, but didn’t quite make it.

Team Russia has Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar. They also sadly have……..Ovechkin. Blah!

Brooks Orpik is playing for good old Team USA. Two former Penguins, Ryan Whitney and Ryan Malone, are also playing.

With Penguins on three different teams, it can be hard to choose who to root for. Normally, I would say Team Russia, because Malkin’s is pretty much my favorite, but Russia has Ovechkin. I have a hard time rooting for a team that has Ovechkin. So, I say….

Go Team Canada!

Pens Game 1-28

Bad Score...Fun Night

4-1 Sens.

I don’t wanna say I don’t care that they lost, because that makes me sound like I’m not a true fan. So, I’ll rephrase it. I don’t mind that they lost, because being there in person was awesome. Just being in the arena was amazing. And there were some highlights to last night’s game.

For one thing, it was Jordan Staal’s 300th game. This would seem like no big deal, but it is. He is actually the youngest player (21 years old) in the NHL to have ever gotten to 300 games. Go Staalsy.

It was the night of 300’s, last night. First, Staal’s aforementioned 300th game, and Fedotenko got his 300th NHL point. It came from an assist on the Pens only goal. Malkin scored the goal, and Nick Johnson, also assisted.

Well, there may not have been any good fights, but there were some scuffles and one particularly hard hit on Ottowa’s Chris Neil, delivered by Sergei Gonchar.

So, better luck next time boys…I blame it on the blue jerseys. Next victim, the Wings.


And here’s a quick stat update:
Evgeni Malkin is up to 54 pts (19 goals, 35 assists).
Sidney Crosby is still #3, in the NHL, for points and goals (67 and 33 respectively).
The Pens are 4th in the conference, and tied for 7th in the league.

Yea, that's a ticket to tonight's game. Yea, I'm going. And yea, I'm super excited. But who wouldn't be?

Welcome Pens Fans

So... I may not be the most knowlageable sports fan out there, but one thing I do know, is that I love the Pittsburgh Penguins. I might not know every stat, but I know I support them all-the-way, win or lose.

I hope that, with this blog, I can connect with some fellow Pens fans.

Keep checking back for more content. I will try to update as much as I can.
